Is Destiny 2 crossplay? Platforms and cross save, explained

Destiny 2 has had full crossplay since the Bungie Name system arrived in August 2021, and every current platform shares it by default.

That means a PC player, a PlayStation player, and an Xbox player can fireteam up and drop into the same activity together, with no setting to switch on first.

The catch is the one thing most people get wrong, so it's the detail we flag first. Crossplay is always on, and there's no toggle anywhere to turn it off.

The one split worth knowing

Full crossplay covers your fireteam and most matchmaking, but the competitive playlists draw a line.

Crucible and Gambit split matchmaking into a console pool and a PC pool, so console players queue against console players and PC players against PC players. Everything non-competitive, like Strikes, social spaces, and most PvE, matchmakes everyone together with no pool split. There's one wrinkle in that split. If a mixed console-and-PC fireteam queues a competitive activity together, the whole group gets pushed into the PC pool for that match.

Which platforms play together

Here's the full picture in one table. That pool covers PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Cross Save is a different system from crossplay

People mix these two up constantly, so it's worth separating them cleanly. Crossplay is about who you can play with; Cross Save is about your character following you between platforms.

Destiny 2 does support Cross Save, and yes, it's a separate thing you set up yourself. You link your PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam accounts at Bungie.net under Settings, then Accounts and Linking, and pick one Active Account whose characters, progress, and Silver become your unified profile everywhere.

One limit trips people up. Content you bought on one storefront, like an expansion, doesn't automatically carry to another platform through Cross Save, so a purchase made on Steam stays tied to Steam.

There's also a cooldown to plan around. If you turn Cross Save off after activating it, you're locked out of turning it back on for 90 days, so treat the switch as a deliberate decision rather than something to flip back and forth.

How to add a cross-platform friend

Because crossplay is on automatically, there's nothing to enable. The setup is just adding the right people.

Friends are added by their exact Bungie Name, which is a platform name plus a numeric ID, not by a raw platform username. Add them as a Bungie Friend through the in-game Roster and Invites tab or over on Bungie.net, then invite them to your fireteam the same way you would anyone on your own platform. Can you turn Destiny 2 crossplay off?

No, and this is where Destiny 2 differs from a lot of other crossplay games. There's no setting to disable Cross Play, on any platform, because it's always on.

If you specifically want a same-platform-only experience, that option doesn't exist here. The one switch you do control is Cross Save, which you can turn off at Bungie.net, subject to that 90-day re-enable lock above.

Cross-platform voice chat

In-game voice chat works across platforms too. Bungie added cross-platform fireteam voice in a follow-up update shortly after crossplay launched in 2021.

Clearing up the Stadia and Switch claims

Two stale details still show up in older guides, so here's the record straight. Google Stadia was a real Destiny 2 crossplay platform back in 2021, but Stadia shut down in January 2023, so any current list that includes it is out of date.
