Borderlands 3 has full crossplay today, so PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players can all run the same co-op session together. It arrived in two stages, though, and that is the part most people trip over.
Gearbox added crossplay for Xbox, Steam, and Epic on June 24, 2021, and left PlayStation out at first. PlayStation crossplay followed on June 1, 2022, and that update is what put PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC into one shared pool.
The thing crossplay does not bring with it is a shared save. We cover cross-save on its own below, because it is a separate feature with a different answer.
Which platforms play together
Everything runs through SHiFT Matchmaking, which is the free account system Gearbox uses to connect players across storefronts and consoles. Here is the current picture, straight from the crossplay update notes.

The short version: if you are on PC (Steam or Epic), any PlayStation console, or any Xbox console, you are in one queue with everyone else. PS4 and PS5 sit in that pool alongside Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, so console generation is not a barrier either. Mac is the one soft spot. It plays through Epic, and Epic is a supported platform, but the official notes do not call Mac out by name, so we would confirm it in your own lobby before planning a night around it.
Cross-save and cross-progression
Crossplay and cross-save get mixed up all the time, so here is the split. Crossplay is who you can play with; cross-save (also called cross-progression) is whether your character and loot follow you to another platform.
Borderlands 3 does not have cross-save between different platform families. There is no official way to move a character from PC to console, or between PlayStation and Xbox. Gearbox has acknowledged that players keep asking for it, but it has not committed to full cross-save.
A few narrow exceptions exist. Two PlayStation consoles can share a save through PlayStation's own sync, and two Xbox consoles can do the same through Xbox's system, so a PS4-to-PS5 or Xbox One-to-Series X|S move keeps your progress.
On PC you can carry a save between the Steam and Epic Games Store versions by copying the files in your local SaveGames folder yourself. How to play together across platforms
Crossplay is not silently switched on for you. The first time you launch after the crossplay update, the game prompts you to enable or disable it and to set a Crossplay Display Name, so it is opt-in at that prompt.
That display name is tied to your SHiFT account and is how cross-platform friends find you. If you skipped the prompt, you can set or change it later under Social, then the SHiFT tab, then Account Details.
Once crossplay is on, open the in-game Social menu to invite or join cross-platform friends through SHiFT Matchmaking. From there a mixed PC, PlayStation, and Xbox group parties up the same way a same-platform group would. For another looter shooter with full crossplay, see Destiny 2 crossplay.
How to turn crossplay off
You can turn crossplay off whenever you want. Open the in-game menu and go to Options, then Network & Social, then General, and toggle crossplay off there.
That keeps your matchmaking to your own platform without uninstalling anything. You will still keep a Crossplay Display Name on the account even with the setting turned off.
Voice chat across platforms
We will not guess on this one. Cross-platform voice chat is not officially documented in the crossplay sources we could verify, so we are not going to claim it works or does not.
If you want reliable voice in a mixed group, the safe route is something outside the game, like Discord or your console's party chat. Those work alongside a crossplay session regardless of what platform each player is on.
The record older guides get wrong
If you land on a page that says Borderlands 3 has no PlayStation crossplay, that answer is stale. It was correct between June 2021 and June 2022, and it stopped being true when PlayStation support shipped on June 1, 2022.

One honest note on sourcing: the publisher's dedicated crossplay support article blocked our automated check, so we confirmed the enable, disable, and platform details against the official 2K update notes, which loaded fine, plus consistent secondary reporting.
