Is Baldur's Gate 3 crossplay? Co-op between platforms

If you searched this before and came across an article saying BG3 has no crossplay, that's out of date. It was true before Patch 8, but not now.

Which platforms play together

Baldur's Gate 3 only ever launched on current-generation hardware, so there's no PS4, Xbox One, or Switch pool to worry about. All four supported platforms sit in one shared crossplay pool.

That's the whole matrix, and it's a clean one. A PC player, a Mac player, a PS5 player, and an Xbox Series X|S player can all be in the same four-person co-op run together. Cross-progression and cross-save

Crossplay and cross-progression get mixed up constantly, so here's the split. Crossplay is who you can play with; cross-progression is whether your save follows you between platforms.

Baldur's Gate 3 has both. Patch 8 shipped full cross-platform progression alongside crossplay, per Larian's own patch notes.

That means your campaign progress carries across PC, Mac, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S when you sign in with the same linked Larian account. Start a run on PC, keep going on PS5, and your save comes with you.

The one thing to confirm on your end is the account link. Cross-progression is tied to your Larian profile, so you need the same account signed in on each platform for saves to sync.

How to play together across platforms

Cross-play is on by default, so there's no master switch to flip before you start. You set it up per lobby from the multiplayer menu.

From the main menu, choose Multiplayer, open the Cross-Play tab, then pick Create to host a lobby or Join to enter a friend's game on the Larian Network. Some platforms also expose a Cross-Platform Play toggle under Settings, so check your platform's exact menu wording if the tab isn't where you expect.

Mods work in cross-play lobbies, with one rule: every player needs matching mod versions installed. A Mod Verification prompt handles enabling, upgrading, downgrading, or installing anything you're missing when you join.

On PC you can filter for mods tagged "Available on Console & Mac" so your group stays compatible. Console has a mod cap of 100 and no third-party mods, which is worth knowing before you build a heavily modded party.

How to turn crossplay off

There's no confirmed global off switch, but a host can keep a session same-platform. Set the lobby to Friends Only or Public and skip the Cross-Play tab, and you restrict who can join to players on your own platform.

We'd treat that as a per-lobby choice rather than a permanent setting. Larian's material doesn't confirm a persistent account-wide toggle that disables cross-play everywhere, so the reliable method is controlling it lobby by lobby when you host.

Voice chat across platforms

Baldur's Gate 3 has no built-in voice chat on any platform, crossplay or not. This one trips people up because the co-op is so party-driven.

To talk during a run, use something outside the game: Discord, Xbox party chat, or PlayStation party chat all work fine alongside a cross-play session. If you want another couch-style co-op, It Takes Two's co-op rules spell out who can join.

The record most old guides get wrong

For most of the game's life, the honest answer was no. Baldur's Gate 3 launched without crossplay, and a lot of guides still carry that original verdict.
