There's no true cross-platform play in It Takes Two, so a PlayStation player and an Xbox player can't team up in the same session. What the game does support is cross-generation co-op, only between systems in the same family, like PS4 with PS5 or Xbox One with Xbox Series X|S.

Which platforms can play together

It Takes Two is a two-player co-op game, so "crossplay" here really means who your one guest can be. The answer stays inside a single platform family, with a cross-generation allowance so newer and older hardware from the same brand connect.

So a PS4 owner can invite a PS5 friend, and an Xbox One owner can invite an Xbox Series X|S friend, because cross-generation play is supported within each brand. Why people think It Takes Two is crossplay

The Friend's Pass is doing all the work behind that assumption. Because a friend can play the full game without buying it, plenty of guides describe It Takes Two as if any two people can link up anywhere, which isn't the case.

EA's own Friend's Pass page is clear that the invite only reaches someone in the same platform family. It's free-friend access first, and the cross-generation reach is a bonus on top, not open cross-platform play. Cross-progression is a separate question

No, It Takes Two doesn't have cross-progression, and it's the feature most often confused with crossplay. Your save is tied to the platform and storefront you're playing on, so moving to a different system means starting the campaign from the beginning.

PC has an extra catch worth knowing. Steam saves sync to Steam Cloud, but EA App cloud saves don't carry over to the Steam version, so even a PC-to-PC storefront switch loses your progress.

The two features do different jobs, so keep them straight. Crossplay decides who can be your co-op partner in a session, and cross-progression decides whether your progress follows you, which here it doesn't. How to invite a friend with the Friend's Pass

The owner is always the host, and the guest joins on the free pass. Here's the flow we'd walk a friend through on a compatible platform.

First, your friend downloads the free Friend's Pass from their own platform's store, whether that's the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop, Steam, or the EA App. Then you invite them from the game's main menu, and only you, the owner, can host the session.

One host limit is easy to miss. You can invite a new friend once the previous guest stops playing, so the pass isn't locked to a single person forever.

Online play also needs the usual subscription on each side. Both players need the relevant service, meaning PS Plus, Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass Ultimate, or Nintendo Switch Online, to play together over the internet. There's no crossplay toggle to hunt for. Invites are opt-in per session, so instead of turning anything off, you just make sure your friend is on a system in the same family as yours.

Voice chat across platforms

Because co-op stays inside one platform family, the simplest option is that platform's own voice or party system, which both players already share. A PS4 and PS5 pair can use a PlayStation party, and an Xbox One and Series X|S pair can use an Xbox party.
