Is Elden Ring crossplay? Co-op and platforms, explained

Elden Ring doesn't have crossplay. You can't summon, invade, or duel across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, so a PC player and a PS5 player can't share the same session no matter how they set it up.

The one exception is cross-generation play inside a single family. PS4 and PS5 players share one multiplayer pool, and Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players share another.

So the whole rule for jolly co-operation is simple: match the platform family first, then sort out passwords and summon signs. Below we lay out every pairing, cover cross-save, and walk through the co-op setup.

Elden Ring cross-platform play, pairing by pairing

Here's how multiplayer connects across every platform pairing. In this table, crossplay means summon signs, invasions, and duels working between the two sides.

The only cross-device play is cross-generation, and it stays inside one brand. Anything that crosses brands, PC to console or PlayStation to Xbox, simply isn't supported. A co-op RPG that does connect all four platforms is the exception, and our guide on Baldur's Gate 3 crossplay explains how.

Cross-progression and cross-save

Cross-progression is a different question from crossplay, and people mix the two up all the time. Crossplay is about playing together; cross-save is about your character moving between devices.

Elden Ring supports cross-save only within a single console family. A PS4 save carries up to PS5, and an Xbox One save carries up to Xbox Series X|S, using each platform's own save-transfer and cloud tools.

There's no cross-progression between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The co-op spinoff follows the same rules, as our Elden Ring Nightreign crossplay guide explains. A PC save can't move to console and a console save can't move to PC, so switching brands means starting a fresh Tarnished.

How to play co-op with a friend

First, both of you need to be on the same platform family. Elden Ring is one of our picks for the best PS5 open world games if you want more open worlds on the console. Once that's settled, the setup takes a minute.

Open the multiplayer settings and set a matching password on both accounts. It's case-sensitive, so type it exactly the same way on each side.

Use a Tarnished's Furled Finger to lay down a co-op summon sign, and have your friend use a Furlcalling Finger Remedy to view and summon signs at a Site of Grace or a summoning pool. With a shared password, only players using that password see your golden sign, and the same filter covers invasions and messages.

There's no menu to invite or match with someone on a different platform family, because that connection doesn't exist in the game.

Voice chat across platforms

Elden Ring has no built-in cross-platform voice chat. Voice runs through each platform's own party system, like PSN party chat or Xbox party chat, or a third-party app such as Discord on PC.

None of those bridge across families either, so a PS5 player and a PC player would need an outside app to talk.

Will Elden Ring ever get crossplay?
