Red Dead Redemption 2 has no crossplay, so a PC rider can't posse up with a friend on PlayStation or Xbox in Red Dead Online. PlayStation and Xbox never mix either.
Story mode is single-player, so the whole question really means Red Dead Online, the game's shared open world. And there, play stays locked inside one platform brand.
The only cross-device play is cross-generation inside a single family. PS4 and PS5 players ride together, and Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players ride together, but the brands never connect.
What actually plays together
Rockstar has never listed crossplay as a feature for Red Dead Redemption 2 or Red Dead Online, and it hasn't announced one since launch. Here's the short version before the full table.

- Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players share their own pool the same way.
- PC, PlayStation, and Xbox never connect to each other.

Cross-progression and cross-save
This is the part people mix up, so it gets its own answer. Crossplay is about playing together in one session; cross-progression is about your character and progress moving to another platform. They're two different things, and Red Dead Online supports neither across brands.
Your character, rank, currency, and story progress are tied to the platform where you made the save. Rockstar doesn't support moving Red Dead Online progress between PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, so switching brands means starting a fresh outlaw from scratch. There's one historical footnote worth knowing. When Google Stadia shut down, Rockstar offered a one-time export of money, Gold Bars, and XP from Stadia to PC, PS4, or Xbox One. That was a Stadia-specific rescue tool, not a general cross-progression feature, and it doesn't let you shuffle a save between the main platforms today.
How to play Red Dead Online with friends
There's no crossplay switch to flip, because there's no crossplay to turn on. You group up by staying inside your own platform family, and same-brand cross-gen play just works through normal online multiplayer.
- On PlayStation, PS4 and PS5 players can invite each other straight into a posse or session.
- On Xbox, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can do the same.
- On PC, you play with other PC players.
Send invites from the Online menu or the player interaction menu, or drop into a friend's session from your platform's friends list. Because a PC-to-console or PlayStation-to-Xbox link never existed, there's also no "turn crossplay off" toggle to hunt for, since there's nothing there to disable.
Voice chat between platforms
Red Dead Online has in-game voice chat through a headset or mic on each platform, plus your platform's own party chat on top. Neither one crosses platform boundaries, though, for the simple reason that the sessions themselves don't cross them.
If you want to talk to a friend on another brand, you'd need an outside app like Discord, the same as with any game that keeps its networks separate.
Will Red Dead Online ever get crossplay?
Rockstar has never announced crossplay for Red Dead Online, and there's no official roadmap for it. The studio has shifted Red Dead Online's development resources toward other priorities, so a future crossplay add looks unlikely, even though nothing official rules it in or out.
