Is GTA 5 crossplay? GTA Online cross-platform, explained

No. GTA Online has no crossplay between PC and console, and none between PlayStation and Xbox. The only cross-network play sits among the PC storefronts, which all connect to the same PC server pool.

So a friend on PS5 can't join your PC session, and an Xbox player can't squad up with someone on PlayStation. If you want to run heists or free-roam together, you both need to be in the same platform family.

We get asked this a lot, because a few write-ups fold the PC storefront situation in with "crossplay" and then bury the real answer. Let's split it cleanly.

Cross-progression and cross-save

This is where people get tripped up, so it gets its own answer. Cross-progression means carrying your character and progress to another platform, which is a different thing from playing together in one session.

You can't migrate a profile between PlayStation and Xbox, and you can't move a profile between any console and PC. Rockstar's support documentation states these transfers are blocked across families and to PC.

How to play GTA Online with friends

There's no cross-platform setting to turn on, because GTA Online has no cross-platform play to enable in the first place. You group up by staying inside your own platform pool.

• On PC, invite anyone on any PC storefront. A Rockstar Games Launcher player and a Steam player are already in the same pool, so invites just work.
• On PlayStation, PS4 and PS5 players can invite each other.
• On Xbox, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can invite each other.

Send invites from the in-game Online menu or the player interaction menu, or join a friend's session straight from your friends list. Since there's no console-to-PC bridge, an invite across families isn't an option to begin with, so there's nothing to switch off either.

Voice chat follows the same boundaries as sessions. It works within a platform pool, so PC to PC across storefronts or PS4 to PS5 is fine, but it won't reach between PC and console or between PlayStation and Xbox.

Setting the record straight

A quick note, because the search results are muddy here. Some pages label the PC storefront interoperability as "GTA 5 crossplay," which overstates it. Rockstar's own framing treats that as cross-network play within one platform, PC, not cross-platform play with consoles, so we keep the two labeled separately.
