Is Terraria crossplay? What works and what does not

Terraria is a partial case, not a clean yes or no. Right now the pools connect only between PC and mobile, or within a single console family like PS4 with PS5, but not across PC, consoles, and mobile as a whole.

So whether Terraria counts as cross platform depends entirely on which devices your group owns. PC and mobile friends are in luck; a PC player and a console player are not, at least not yet. What connects right now

Two kinds of Terraria multiplayer work across devices today. PC and mobile can share the same world, and each console family plays across its own hardware.

For PC and mobile, the link runs through a dedicated server rather than a direct invite. Both players need the same game version, and there's no peer-to-peer PC-to-mobile option without that server.

The console side is simpler but narrower. PS4 and PS5 owners play together, and Xbox One sits in the same pool as Xbox Series X|S, but neither family reaches the other.

Nintendo Switch is the odd one out. Minecraft handles its editions differently, and our Minecraft crossplay guide explains the Bedrock and Java split. A Switch copy does not connect to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or mobile at all.

Cross-progression and cross-save: a separate question

Crossplay and cross-progression are not the same thing, and Terraria answers them differently. Crossplay is who you can play with; cross-progression is whether your character and world move between platforms.

On cross-progression, the answer is no. Your characters and world files stay tied to the platform where you made them, and Re-Logic has not announced any transfer between PC, console, and mobile.

How to play together across platforms

For PC and mobile, set up a dedicated server. Download TerrariaServer from the Terraria files in Steam or from terraria.org, run it, and have every player connect to it on the matching game version.

There's no crossplay toggle to switch off, which is worth saying because that question comes up. Terraria has nothing to disable here, since the only connected pools are PC-mobile and same-family consoles in the first place. Full crossplay is coming, but it is not live yet

Some write-ups talk about Terraria crossplay as if the full PC, console, and mobile mix already works. It does not, and treating it as shipped is the most common mistake on this topic.

Here's the accurate status. Re-Logic has confirmed full crossplay is in development, calling the first console-inclusive build Crossplay Phase One and tying it to version 1.4.6, with a Phase Two planned to add shared join codes across any platform.

What's missing is a date. As of the 15th-anniversary post in May 2026 and the June 2026 State of the Game, Re-Logic gave no confirmed release window, so we're treating 1.4.6 as officially planned rather than out.

Voice chat in Terraria

Terraria has no built-in voice chat on any platform. Players lean on console party chat, Steam voice, or a third-party app like Discord to talk during co-op.
