One common point of confusion is the Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition bundle. It lets you play both editions under one purchase, but it does not merge your worlds or progress into a single save. Each edition still keeps its own.
How to play Minecraft together across platforms
Bedrock crossplay is on by default, and there's no single crossplay toggle to flip the way console shooters have. You control who joins at the world level instead.
For Bedrock:
- Sign in with a Microsoft account on each device.
- Add friends through that account, then invite them to your world, your Realm, or your server.

For Java:

- Use the in-game multiplayer and friends list, or join a Java server by its IP address.
There's no crossplay switch to turn off, because the split is structural rather than a setting. Setting the record straight
A quick clarification, because search results muddy this one. You'll see claims that Java and Bedrock can play together. Officially they can't, and Mojang has never connected the two editions.
Third-party tools like Geyser can bridge between Java and Bedrock, but they're unofficial, unsupported by Mojang, and used at your own risk.
