Battlefield 2042 has crossplay, but not as one open pool. It's split by console generation, so PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S all matchmake together in one group, while PlayStation 4 and Xbox One share a separate group of their own.
The short version we give people is "yes, within your generation." A PS5 squad can play with PC and Xbox Series players, but they can't drop into a match with a friend still on PS4 or Xbox One.
That split matters more than the platform list, so we'll lay out exactly who plays with who below, then answer cross-progression on its own, because it's the part people mix up most.
Which platforms play together
The dividing line is hardware generation, not brand. New-gen platforms sit in one pool because they support 128-player matches, and last-gen platforms sit in another capped at 64.

How the two generation pools work
Think of it as two crossplay rooms rather than one. The new-gen room holds PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and everyone in it can fill a 128-player server together.
The old-gen room holds PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and it tops out at 64 players. The reason for the wall is that player cap: 128-player matches don't run on last-gen hardware, so the new-generation pool with old-generation pool matchup simply isn't offered.

Cross-progression is a separate question
Yes, Battlefield 2042 has cross-progression, and it's the feature we see confused with crossplay the most. It follows your EA Account rather than the machine you're playing on.
Link your PC, PlayStation, and Xbox accounts to the same EA Account, and your career progress, unlocks, and stats carry across all of them. So crossplay decides who's in your match, and cross-progression decides whether your loadout and rank follow you to another system. That means you can grind on PS5 and pick up the same progress on PC, even though those are the same pool anyway, or hop between a new-gen and a last-gen console and keep everything. The pools stay split for matchmaking; your progress does not.
How to play with friends across platforms
There's nothing to switch on. Crossplay is enabled by default, so as long as your friend is in the same generation pool, you're already able to squad up.
Invite them the normal way, through your platform's usual friends or party system. A PC, PS5, and Xbox Series player can group with no extra crossplay step, and the same goes for a PS4 and Xbox One duo in the old-gen pool. How to turn crossplay off
This one is a real query, so here's the exact path. You have to be in the main menu, outside any party, and not mid-matchmaking or in a server, then open Accessibility & Options (Settings), go to the General tab, and toggle Cross-Play off.
Console players get a narrower option too: you can opt out of matching against PC players while staying in your pool. Heads-up, some players have reported this opt-out behaving inconsistently on Xbox compared with PlayStation, so it isn't guaranteed to work identically on both.
Voice chat across platforms
We won't guess on this one. EA's official crossplay help content we reviewed doesn't document how in-game voice chat behaves across platforms, so we're not going to claim it works or doesn't.
If cross-platform voice matters to your squad, a separate party chat app is the safe bet until EA states the behavior directly.
What some guides get wrong
The most common miss we see is treating Battlefield 2042 as fully open crossplay. It isn't: the generation wall is real, and a PS4 player genuinely cannot join a PS5 friend's match.
The other one is the console opt-out. Some write-ups present it as a clean, guaranteed toggle, but the inconsistent behavior on Xbox has come from community reports rather than an official EA statement, so we flag it as a known quirk, not a confirmed feature.
