An idle game keeps making progress while you're not playing, banking coins or resources you spend on upgrades when you check back in. Tapping speeds things up, but it isn't required.
You'll also see the same games called incrementals or clickers. All three names point at that one loop.
How idle progress works
Every idle game runs on a production rate, whether that's gold per second, eggs per minute, or damage per tap. You check in, spend what piled up, and the rate goes higher.
Most of them keep earning while the app is closed, so a two-minute session still moves you forward. That's the part that separates a real idle game from a normal grind with a speed-up button.
Deeper ones add a prestige reset, which means starting over in exchange for a permanent boost. Nearly all of them install free and are paid for with ads or optional in-app purchases.
Idle games we've recommended
- AFK Arena tops our best mobile idle games list. The hero roster keeps fighting while the app is shut, and a 4.5 average across 3.7 million Google Play ratings puts a very large crowd behind it.
- Egg, Inc. is our number two pick in that same guide, with the strongest player verdict in the top three at 4.7 from 1.4 million ratings. Its farm carries on producing between your sessions, screen off or on.
- Cats & Soup shows up in our cozy mobile games guide, where NEOWIZ files it as a cozy idle cat tycoon. Between visits the upgrades do the earning, so a session is mostly deciding where the takings go.
Idle, incremental, or clicker
Idle is the label Google Play uses, and it tags several of our picks with it outright. Incremental is the older community name for the same design.
Clicker leans on the tapping side, where you're rewarded for touching the screen instead of leaving it alone. Tap Titans 2 sits closest to that end of our list, which is why we ranked it fifth.
