What does in-app purchase mean?

An in-app purchase is anything you buy from inside an app after you install it, such as in-game currency, extra characters, or removing ads.

An in-app purchase is anything you buy from inside an app after you install it, such as in-game currency, extra characters, or removing ads. Most are optional, so you can keep playing without spending.

On Google Play, a game's store listing flags in-app purchases before you download, so you know spending is possible inside.

How in-app purchases work

Most mobile games install free and make their money once you're already playing. The purchases usually take a few shapes.

Common ones are in-game currency for upgrades, one-off unlocks like a level pack or an ad-free version, and random-item purchases that let you pull a random character rather than buy the one you want. That last kind powers most gacha games.

The store label only tells you purchases exist, not what they cost. You see the price once you're inside.

In-app purchases in real games

These picks come from our mobile guides, with each monetization line taken from the official store listing.

  • Clash of Clans installs free with in-app purchases and no ads, so the cost only arrives once you're invested. See our strategy guide.
  • Genshin Impact is free with in-app purchases and no ads, and its pulls are random-item purchases rather than fixed buys. See our gacha guide.
  • Good Pizza, Great Pizza is free with both ads and in-app purchases, a common pairing on smaller titles. See our cozy guide.
  • Dead Cells charges for the download and still lists in-app purchases on top. See our offline guide.

Ads or in-app purchases: reading the store label

A Google Play listing can carry ads, in-app purchases, both, or neither, and the label shows which before you install.

  • In-app purchases only: you can spend inside, but no ads interrupt play. Clash of Clans and Genshin Impact both list this way.
  • Ads and in-app purchases: you also see adverts unless a purchase removes them, which is the usual setup across our cozy and idle lists.
  • Neither: rare, and usually a paid game. Stardew Valley is the clean example, a paid download with no ads or in-app purchases.

In-app purchases also differ from DLC, which is normally a larger add-on you buy once rather than a steady stream of smaller items.

Do you have to pay for in-app purchases?

No, every free game in our mobile guides keeps its purchases optional, so you can finish without spending. The listing just warns you that spending is available if you want it.

Earn before you spend in-app

In-app purchases are optional. HeyCash pays you for surveys and game offers instead, with your first cash-out at $5 (5,000 points), then $1.
